Esophageal Motility

Esophageal Motility Graph

Esophageal motility is the examination of the esophagus for any movement problems using a small catheter which measures pressure in the esophagus with swallowing.  This procedure is done at the hospital with specialized equipment and by trained nurses.  A small flexible catheter is inserted into the esophagus.  Once the catheter is in place, several swallows of water will be done.  The catheter will measure pressures in the esophagus during swallowing and a graph of esophageal motility will be generated.  The catheter will be removed after 15 minutes.  Later, the information will be reviewed by our physicians, and you will be contacted with results in a few days.
